This post touches on the reasons as to why people may not understand and/or respect your boundaries.
❗Here are some possible explanations❗
Lack of communication: If you don't clearly communicate your boundaries, others may not know what they are or may not understand their importance.
Different values or beliefs: People may have different values, beliefs, or cultural norms that lead them to disregard boundaries. This usually happens unintentionally and you may have to reiterate it a few times before they'll understand.
Selfishness or entitlement: Some individuals may prioritize their own needs and desires over others' boundaries...Some of these people just don't care and other measures may need to be taken.
Lack of empathy: People may not be able to put themselves in others' shoes and understand how their actions affect them. You may find this with narcissistic types
Power dynamics: In situations where there's an imbalance of power (e.g., boss-employee, parent-child), the person with more power may disregard boundaries. Unfortunately this is something neurodivergent people, people with other types of disabilities and people with mental health conditions often experience.
Unconscious biases: Unconscious biases or stereotypes can lead people to disregard boundaries, especially if they're not aware of their biases.
Upbringing or past experiences: People's upbringing or past experiences can shape their attitudes toward boundaries and personal space.
Disability/Mental Illness: Sometimes people with disabilities and/or mental health conditions aren't always fully or even partially aware that they may be overstepping another person's boundaries. This is particularly the case where someone has a disability/difference or mental health condition that affects their social and/or communication and also those with emotional and/or behavioural dysregulation.
Assertiveness training is something to seriously consider learning if you are someone who struggles with setting and/or maintaining boundaries, this type of coaching will help you to better communicate and assert yourself when setting boundaries.
Remember, setting and maintaining healthy boundaries is essential for your well-being and relationships:
